a little time has passed since my last updated blog post. I have since acquired some more information to add to our Selck family. Let me recap the family line.
Timothy Selck emmigrated from Germany (Rendsburg area) in 1866. He came to Winona, Mn and worked as farm hand in Hart township for Claus Ehlers(also a German emmigrant). He later married Claus and Margaretha Ehlers daughter Anje (Anna) Ehlers in 1869. Timothy worked as a tailor for a short time in Winona and moved up river with his wife to Trempealeau where he set up a tailor shop. His brother Johann and wife Matilda also lived in Trempealau for a while. Tim and Anna moved up to Arcadia, Wi where he opened a tailor shop. I have located one of the first ads he placed in the paper for advertising and from there he ran his ad weekly until his early death in 1895 from malaria fever. Tim was well respected in his community. He was involved with the board of trade and documents can be found where he approached the board about renting the upstairs of his tailor shop for Arcadia's first reading room (library). That is not the path they chose but still mentitonable. Tim also ran for mayor and won a single term in 1890. His name can be found stamped in "mayors walk" in Soldiers Walk, Veterans Memorial Park in Arcadia.
Enough about Tim's path. Lets discuss the "Selcks" from Germany. It has been extremely difficult to find any information on this line. From talking with another researcher (and there are very very few that have info that her and I do not already have ) I learned that not only did Tim emmigrate from German but so did his siblings. Tim came in 1866. Four years later, his siblings Catharine (kate) , Claus(charles) and Johann(john) also came aboard the Holsatia in April 1870. Another brother , Peter Selck also came after his siblings. The only mention of their parents names ive found are on Johns marriage license found in Trempealeau county marriage records. It lists parents as Peter and Anna Selck. What we do know is that they left behind 1 sibling, a sister-Anna. Anna was married to Hans Rabe/Raabe. The couple had 4 children, all boys. One of the boys - Otto Raabe married katharina Kirchberg. They had 2 daughters, Anna Raabe Stock and Kate Raabe Suhr. Each of the girls had just 1 child. Anna had a son name Jochen Stock born in the early 1940's. Kate had a daughter named Frauke Suhr also born early 1940's.
After many years having nothing to go on other than little tidbits of information that prove to be accurate , i was able to locate a gravestone with Otto, Katharina, Kate and Anna along with their birth and death dates. Anna most recently passed in 2006.
Whats next? I hope to find information on the Parents of the Selck kids and learn more about where they come from . To the best of my knowledge, they lived in the northern part of Germany known as Schleswig-Holstein. Kate lived in Husum and Anna in Meldorf in 1947. Tim Selck left from Rendsburg. Katherine Selck White left from Neumunster. My biggest brick wall is to find these last two know kids of otto's daughters. If i could find them, id like to share some pretty neat letters shared with me by Pat Gleason.
